You can Be Jailed Two Years For Refusing To Eat Your Wife’s Food – Lawyer

Whereas the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit(DOVVSU) maintains that it constitutes emotional abuse for a husband to refused to eat the wife’s food, Head of Ahmed Legal Consult Musah Armed has disclosed that it is also domestic abuse to force a husband to eat your the wife’s food.

He made this known while speaking on Accra-based Joy News’ programme “The Law” when the Coordinating Director of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), said the refusal to eat one’s spouse’s meal as a way of punishing your partner constitutes domestic violence.

Musah Armed said “For me, I have a problem with the definition as captured in section 1b, 2 and 3 the ones dealing with economic and emotional and verbal psychological human abuse.

Adding that “You see we have fundamental human rights which is entrenched in the Constitution and the enjoyment of these fundamental rights are subject to such laws as contained in chapter 5 to look at the freedom of a person, you can call it the husband”.

“If you look at all the freedoms as entrenched in chapter 5 and then you look at the definition of marriage, the rights of spouses in the marriage, I don’t think I would agree with the lawmaker to cite a provision that says that when you refuse to eat your wives food, you should be punished. It is wrong,” he stressed.

To Armed Musah sections of the Domestic Violence Act contravenes Chapter 5 of the 1992 Constitution.

It would be recalled that the Central Regional Coordinator of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), Superintendent George Appiah-Sakyi last year warned that it is an offense for a husband to reject or refuse to eat his wife’s food and described such behaviors as “emotional abuse”.

According to him, such husbands could be charged for emotional abuse and when found guilty, jailed to a maximum of two years imprisonment or to a fine of 500 penalty units which is equivalent to GH¢6,000 or both.
